On This Women’s Day: A Letter to the Affectionate, Stranger Woman

Dear Stranger-Woman,

I am a stranger to you. You don’t need to give attention to me, smile at me or speak with me, but you did. I never paid attention to you initially, immersed in my own world of trying to impress my new boss and colleagues at my new workplace.

We hit it off soon. We did not need words; you could not understand mine and I never understood yours. Yet our relationship blossomed. You were like the oasis to the barren desert, the only person who ever smiled at me when I entered the office. When all my colleagues did not even take time to ask my name or acknowledge my presence, you gave me all the attention I wanted. Maybe you felt pity for me for being the only girl in the whole building, but I do not want to put a reason behind it; I just want to cherish and bask in your affection.

I never understood Oriya or the local language you spoke. But unknown to me, your words started making more sense to me though your language did not. I understood when you asked me to learn your language so that we can converse more. I wish I did so that I can get to know you more and give the attention you truly deserved.

I never drank tea but for you I did. You wouldn’t take ‘No’ for an answer and like a strict mother reprimanded me to drink it. You used to check my water bottle so many times a day to fill it again. Even if I had taken a little sip, you filled it back immediately with the water brimming and spilling everywhere when I opened it, just like your love.

Some days when I am not feeling well, you used to ask me, in your own way, if I was well. When I used to feel left out, sitting silently without having anyone to speak with, you came as a saviour with your bright yellow silk saree and the big, round red bhindi on your forehead with your hair combed back and knotted in a big round updo.

When I am engrossed in my work and casually turn to the side, there you would be, standing on the other side of my cabin with your hands rested on the partition and looking at me with caring eyes radiating warmth that for a second, I would feel at home away from home.

You used to give me a ‘sorry’ smile when I was sad. You used to give me a ‘cheer up’ smile when I was upset. I never understood how you could decipher my feelings when I thought I had successfully hidden it. Sometimes you used to console me, not by words, but by your sympathetic smile and compassionate eyes.

One day you took me by surprise when you gave me a large, bright red rose and had kept a slightly wilted smaller rose in the side of your hair. I never have the habit of keeping flowers on my hair but that day, I did.

It is a wonder that two people with such extremely different cultural background, educational background and language barriers could bond without any common ground. You loved me like a mother, you understood my necessities before I could ask for, you were the one among the few who could break my brave façade and look at me for who I really am and you were the only person who did it in the shortest time. We spoke more through eyes than by words.

You used to ask me about my family, about why I was staying so far from home. But you never asked my name and neither did I. It is puzzling that two people who knew a lot about each other, but never the names! Maybe that’s the beauty of the bond we share. Names are for people to remember, to call or to talk about. We never did any of that. It was just us, our eyes and our smile. Nothing else mattered.

We have an incomprehensible relationship that no one could ever discern. I could call you ‘my mother’, but I don’t want to put a label on it. It is much more pure and fathomless to limit it under a single label. Until you came, I never knew that I missed out on such a relationship. Now that I have it, I never want to let that go.

You probably wouldn’t understand the concept of Women’s day. But, on this day, I would like to honour you, the invisible you who walked around in the office either with a broom or a tea tray or water or waste cloth.

You are the love that nobody recognized.

You are the compassion that nobody cared.

You are the beautiful smile that nobody looked twice.

You are the unsung hero that everybody needs but nobody knows.

Happy Women’s Day, My Special Stranger!

With loads of love,

The Girl Whose Morning You Brightened Everyday

The Day Of The Jackal – A Riveting Read

My friend gifted me this book – The Day Of The Jackal by Frederick Forsyth – on my birthday, considering the fact that I love fiction and he wants me to gravitate more towards non-fiction. So he kind of found a common base in between with this book.

Anyways, I was sceptical at first. An imaginary story set in an almost realistic background about a planned assassination of the President of France? Well, it look me a few months to give the book the go.

And boy, was I proved wrong! Initially, I felt the story progressing a bit slow for my taste, but once the base was set, it was so interesting that I was reading it in every possible free time I could manage.

(Pardon for the worn out book picture; the results of carrying it around everywhere I went)

The story is about an Englishman who is hired by OAS to assassinate the then President of France, General De Gaulle. It progresses to elaborate his planning and the part on the France to protect its President.

An interesting part of this book is that, the author reveals the end of the story much earlier in the book. It was actually a great risk but it was worth it to read till the last even though I already how it was going to end.

A little digging about the author, Frederick Forsyth, revealed that he had been working as a journalist in the France during that period and from what he had learnt from the bits and pieces he had heard and the knowledge he had gained, he created a fictional tale surrounded by realistic events.

The language of the book and the way it makes the readers hooked in suspense even when they already knew how it is going to end, is a great feat in itself! The plot is well thought of with the details proving that author’s extensive insight and utter brilliance of the parallel story that was carried on side-by-side.

I would definitely recommend this book to everyone who loves a good mystery novel or a historical novel, as it has the ability to satisfy a wide variety of readers.

If you have already read the book or just want to share your opinion on my review, share it in the comments.

Happy readin until the next review!

For old times’ sake

For old times’ sake I did,

juttered out the ravenous calm

in hopes of sanity,

O pull me up!

For I’m sinking in deep and deep.

A no-ending black hole,  raws and all

scraping isn’t worrisome, no more,

plummeting a ten times glory, it seem,

this path down the sucker with an abhorous zeal

not ‘ye all judgemental; but for thyself

a hoarder of pain looked up for one last time-

bring me up not this hellhole;

screams won’t be so bad anyway

I repent, not for the sins, but

for thyself endurement.

Mystery Blogger Award

Sometimes unexpected things bring a pleasant surprise. I have always said that love from my followers always keep me going and I had an off-day when I saw this message from Bookworm Muse that I was nominated for this Mystery Blogger Award, it boosted my morale. Though I don’t look for validations, when I get it in unexpected times, it brings a whole lot of happiness with it.

I want to thank Bookworm Muse for nominating me!

So here is what the award is about.

“It’s an award for amazing bloggers with ingenious posts. Their blog not only captivates; it inspires and motivates. They are one of the best out there, and they deserve every recognition they get. This award is also for bloggers who find fun and inspiration in blogging, and they do it with so much love and passion.”

Created by Okoto Enigma.

The rules are:

  • Put the award logo/image on your blog.
  • List the rules.
  • Thank whoever nominated you and provide a link to their blog.
  • Mention the creator of the award and provide a link as well.
  • Tell your readers 3 things about yourself.
  • You have to nominate 10 – 20 people.
  • Notify your nominees by commenting on their blog.
  • Ask your nominees any 5 questions of your choice; with one weird or funny question (specify).
  • Share a link to your best post(s).

Three things about myself:

  • I am a pure vegetarian and I can survive my entire life with ice cream.
  • I am a lazy person when it comes to doing things for me.
  • I generally do not like to take the help from someone, unless it is the last straw I had to pull out.

Here are the questions I had to answer:

  1. Why did you start your blog?

Well, my first blog was Wattpad Review Corner. I actually wanted to start a blog to put my thoughts out and make my writing a regular practice and hence I started it because, during those periods, I was a big fan of Wattpad. Though the stories are at par with published authors, there wasn’t any website dedicated to review the stories on it. Hence I came up with the idea to start a blog for it.

2. What’s the one thing in your life that you wish you could change?

There isn’t anything I will change as each and every experience I had shaped me into the person I am and I believe that this is exactly where I need to be, at this point of time.

3. What are your pet-peeves?

When it is a humorous comment or a joke and the other person takes it seriously and actually starts explaining it again and again, I just want to run out of there. Some can’t take a funny joke, which doesn’t insult them or anyone, just a normal joke, but they can’t understand any funny thing.

4. If you were given the chance to get that one thing you had always wanted and the chance to travel the world, which would you choose and why?

I would travel the world. It is one of my dreams that is yet to be fulfilled.

5. What is the one goal you didn’t mind not achieving?

Not becoming a great Engineer which was my goal a few years back, but my goals have now changed and I am happy that I did not become a great Engineer.

My nominees:

Ken Thinks Aloud

Dynamic Philosophies

Double Edge Web

Rant and Reason

Moonlit Pieces

Tanja Britton Writer

Metal Flower Maker

Ms Toy Whisperer

Questions for my nominees:

1. What gives you a thrill everytime you blog?

2. What is the one thing which you will not exchange for anything in the world?

3. What is one daily ritual that you will not miss out?

4. Name one characteristic of you which no one knows about.

5. What, according to you, is the best thing that happened in your life?

All the best for my nominees!

Cheers!

I Found My Love – Writing

Life is full of surprises and we often surprise ourselves when faced with challenging situations. I was put in one such situation and my decision surprised and terrified me. It was the excitement  filled terror that took over me!

I’m planning to leave to full time job as an Engineer to do something that I love the most – to write!

Yes! I’m leaving my high paid job in a global multi million dollar group to pursue my passion.

When I think about it, writing has always been a part of life. Time and again, I go back to writing. But, due to the ‘mainstream’ path that the Indian society considers, my dreams of becoming a writer was buried.

I kept it just as hobby, something to go back to at the end of the day.

But what happens when those nights of writing excites you more?

What if you catch yourself dreaming about sentences and content during your day job?

What do you do when all you want to badly do is write an article on that fresh thought you got, immediately, like right now in middle of the day job?

It’s when you realize that enough is enough. I am going to take this decision.

I have found my love.

Though it scares me and sometimes pains me physically to think about all the obstacles I have to face, I’m ready to give it a try because that’s how badly I want it. I really believe that my passion will win at the end and I’m ready to do all it takes.

P.S: I’m now seeking any freelance or full-time assignments or jobs as a content writer or editor. To see my samples, check out the link – my writings. If you need any freelance articles or come to know of any opportunities please do contact me at lakshmipadmanaban05@gmail.com

Thank you all for your support! ☺

Not So Anonymous Anymore

‘Anonymous’ – the word that holds a world of secrets than a cryptic dome.

Like some of you, I felt comfortable being anonymous. Don’t take me wrong. I am not someone who hides in a cocoon inside her own room. I am part of many social media accounts and I don’t shy from being active in them.I chose to be anonymous – in Instagram. Not my personal account where I am quite active, but the other account I opened as a sort of blog to pen my feelings and thoughts that randomly crop up in my mind in the most unexpected times.

I have an another blog in WordPress where I write reviews of stories on Wattpad, in my own identity.

So why did I choose to be anonymous in this?

Because it made me feel safe.

It was the first time I am opening up my feelings and having it out on display for the world to see. I did not want to own my feelings and thoughts – to give a credible source to it.

For many such reasons that seems silly to me now, I decided to ‘not’ identify myself, or more like, I did not want to connect the feelings and thoughts on the blog to myself.

And that Instagram handle is what you see in the right hand side of my blog!

What made me switch from ‘being anonymous’ to ‘connecting my identity to my feelings’?

Courage.

I got fed up of hiding under a pseudonym and angry on myself to be such a coward in social media, while I’m just the opposite of that in my real life.

I wanted to come out of my comfortable zone, and own up to what I deserve, good or bad.

And that moment changed something within me. Though I was brave in my real life, when it comes to my writings, I became the most shy person! I didn’t want the people closest to me to read my writings. But this small step made me to be move forward in that direction.

I am still not 100% comfortable. but I am certainly working towards it and have come a long way to be here till now.

P.S: That Instagram handle’s name is ‘The Thoughtful Rants‘, same like this blog. This blog was started when I revealed my identity in my Instagram handle.

And now that all my readers and followers know who I am, what is need to keep the name ‘The Thoughtful Rants’, which was created for the sole reason of anonymity?

So what do you think? Should I forfeit the blog name and instead take another step forward and use my own identity?

Please comment your opinions.

An advance thank you to all!

Much-needed Change

People are generally on the look out for change; for something different which keeps them engaged and on their toes.

Though at the beginning, changes will be welcomed, as time goes on, once the very interesting work would become a boring one if it is steady and stagnant.

Even when sometimes change is not welcomed, in the bigger picture, change is what is needed to sustain in life and keep it interesting.

Change doesn’t necessarily mean the growth in life although that is what people generally hope for. Change can even be in reverse direction. Any kind of change makes people work towards something; drives and motivates people to set a goal or a target and strive to achieve it.

A constant life might be what people say they need. But only when being in a constant life will one realize that change is what they actually need and starts to secretly and desperately yearn for a change – in any direction.

Embrace the change in life; it is what makes you look forward to tomorrow. It is what brings all the unknown emotions to the surface. It is what reveals the true colors and real intentions of individuals.

Change has the capability to bring out the hidden qualities, good and bad thoughts, real feelings and heartfelt emotions.

The mother of all reasons – change – does more than you realize. Constant change must be the only constant in your life to move forward, to relinquish stagnancy, to push aside the boring life.

Killing Floor, The Start of Jack Reacher

Lee Child’s first Jack Reacher novel, Killing Floor, is the start of the list of many sequels followed. Killing Floor introduces the character Jack Reacher, in the first series and gives a background about him and the type of person he is.

Killing Floor feels like, it has been written for it to become a movie! And some of Jack Reacher’s series has really been made into a movie starring Tom Cruise and manky of you would have seen it. So coming to the 1st one in Jack Reacher’s series, Killing Floor was the first book I read of Lee Child’s works and I could say that I’m ready to read more of his writings!

Killing Floor starts of with Reacher, who is an ex-military and was wandering off to random places, gets caught as a suspect in a murder investigation in the town of Margrave. Margrave is a sleepy town which hasn’t seen a murder in the last thirty years.

Reacher, as a suspect in murder case, turns out to be the person who has a monumental role is solving it. When the number of bodies gets suddenly increased in the otherwise safe town, Reacher discovers that the murders are just the tip of the iceberg in a biggest nationwide crisis, which could shake the entire foundation on which United States economy.  The story progresses into how Reacher along with the help of some locals in the town unravels the scam going on behind it.

The one thing that I liked about the book, and which is different from the others is the simplicity of the language. In the beginning, I felt like the sentences are too short, but it then turned out to be the real factor to hook me on. There are no unnecessay details and descriptions – just the one which is of utmost importance. And hence, it made the reading more interesting. A hard concept behind the story was made to feel like it is one of the simplest ones, because of the minimalistic and precise writing of Lee Child.

All together, it was a perfect read on a lazy Sunday, munching on chips and chocolates!

SIDNEY SHELDON’S HERO – TRACY WHITNEY

If you are someone who is a fan of Sidney Sheldon’s books, then the name Tracy Whitney would have immediately brought a spark of recognition in your mind. Tracy Whitney is one of the strongest female characters ever written. Though Tracy Whitney is not someone who is all good, the negative element is what sets her apart and attracts the readers.

Tracy Whitney was first introduced in the book, ‘If Tomorrow Comes’ as the main lead of the book and Tilly Bagshawe went on to write two more books with Tracy in the book titled, ‘Chasing Tomorrow’ and ‘Reckless’.

Though Tracy was a negative character, what made her the hero and not the bad guy was because of her background, that she was just an ordinary soft, young girl. Her experiences with the wrong crowd made her to land her in jail and that days in jail made her develop into a strong, firm girl who is ready to face any hardships. Tracy goes on to become an arts and jewels thief who steals from the rich.

The brilliance she exhibits when she cheats the police, rich people and government all around the world, the risks she takes, the presence of mind she exhibits and escapes tough situation is mind-blowing.

Though she is a ‘thief’, I cannot stop myself from admiring her skills and brain! Sometimes I go like, ‘What am I even thinking?’, but in the end I can’t just refrain from applauding her mentally every time she deceives everybody out there waiting to catch her! She is a big time crook, yes, but there are a few times her good heart peeps out.

The courage she exhibits in front of even the highest ranked government officials is an inspiration to me to not be afraid of anyone in life. The beautiful way in which she falls in love and mends her broken heart is touching. She sets an example of the independent way a woman should carry herself even with their partner.

Tracy Whitney has become one of the phenomenal characters that I have read and one of the few characters that has stayed with me long after I have completed reading the book.

My first tryst with WedAmor

After some break with writing articles for other websites, I’m back again with my first article in ‘WedAmor’ about…. *hold your breath*…. Royal Palace Wedding!

I believe that, the best characteristic of a writer is to write about any topic given without letting our personal opinion cloud it. And that is how I have written this article and I hope that it reflects the same!

This article is mainly about the cool things that you get to experience if you have a royal palace wedding!

It’s been online just for a few minutes, but I’m already excited!

THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO

This book was long due for many years. I don’t know why I kept putting it off to take this book and read it. But, man, I am glad that I get to read it finally!!

This is one of the greatest books I have read in quite a while. No wonder it has risen to become one of the best-selling books in the world. The first in the Millennium series, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is about a Swedish journalist, Mikael Blomkvist, who made allegations against a billionaire, but wasn’t able to prove his testimony in the court and thus lost the case.

When Mikael is glooming on his defeat, he is invited by Henrik Vanger, the head of Vanger Corporation, to help him solve a case by offering lucrative money and most importantly, important proofs against the billionaire against whom he had lost the case. Since his career as a journalist was almost over, he found no reason to not accept the assignment.

The assignment was to find out his grandniece, Harriet, who went missing many years back. Henrik Vanger provides him with all the evidence which he had collected over the years. Lisbeth Salander, who aptly signifies the title, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, helps him in his case.

The character Lisbeth Salander was inspired from Steig Larsson‘s real life, when he stood by and watched his acquaintance, Lisbeth, being gang-raped when he was at the age of 15. After that, consumed by guilt, he tried to earn her apology but could not. This character Lisbeth Salander, who is also a rape survivor, is a shadow of the real Lisbeth from his life.

The sad part of the book is that Stieg Larsson died before the book was published. A man who has so brilliantly written such an intricate plot with lots of characters, keeping the clarity intact is to be accoladed.

A brilliantly crafted book worth spending some worthwhile time.

I’m waiting eagerly to start on the second book of the Millennium!

IS EQUALITY A FAVOR?

Equality between men and women has been a long-term topic which crops up here and there, with some supporting in favor that equality has indeed been achieved, while some points that, modernism in the world does not even begin to cover equality.

While the world is divided on this topic, from my own personal experiences of these 22 years, equality is a term which people have not even begun to comprehend to the full extent. Equality between men and women doesn’t mean are so ‘generous’ as to ‘give’ the women equality as some sort of ‘favor’. Only when it comes naturally to people, just like we brush your teeth daily. It is not something that people has to do consciously, though at the beginning the need to develop the quality must essentially be started like that.

And to the men, who boast that, they treat their women equally, it is not something to feel proud of. Do you feel proud to provide food for your family? Like everything which is of a necessity, it is something that needs to be put in ‘default mode’.

There is no greater male chauvinist than a man who boasts of treating women around him equally.

THE BLAME WITHIN

The war within;

so horrendous that,

it terrifies me

of my future.

The clashes between, the past

trying hard to match,

with the future ‘imaginary castles’

that I am already living in.

I blame the heart, for

it is the culprit that overrode

the brain to make me believe

that unicorns exist.

The blame game starts-

the war waging between

the heart and brain

to decide who is the bane.

MY SOLACE – BOOKS!

The type of book doesn’t matter.

The genre of the book doesn’t matter.

The time of reading doesn’t matter.

As long as I curl up, alone, with a book in my hand, I feel complete.

It may seem a bit of exaggeration to some. But, for me, Books complete me.

The feel of the book in my hand,

The scratchy noise of the pages turning in the silent room,

The play of the words before my eyes, and

The play of the scene in my mind,

Getting transported to a parallel dimension

Where only me and my book exist.

Books are what I call, ‘My Solace’.

If I could keep on writing about my love for books, I could go on forever. That is when I realized that nothing could ever take the place of books in my life. Not a person, not a thing. The loving feeling that fills up my heart at the mention of books, you could think that I’m actually talking about a person! In fact, the passion that I get towards books feels like a personification of an actual person.

Books are what, that made me go through life, and

Books are what, I will live for.

‘BEST KEPT SECRET’ BY JEFFREY ARCHER

‘Best Kept Secret’, by Jeffrey Archer was one of the recent books that I laid my hands on, and to say, it kept me hooked till the end, would be underestimating. This is the third book in the line of the Clifton series, but if you would choose to read it as a standalone copy, it would definitely make sense. You don’t need to have to have prior knowledge of the series from the start, though some references in the start of the book, about the book would be from the previous series.

At first, it felt a little bit more as many characters were introduced simultaneously, but as the story progressed, it was very natural to comprehend and go with the flow of the story without any hiccups. The Barringtons’ and the Cliftons’ family and the commitment of each of them towards the family is so perfect. Instead of taking only a lead role and following their life story like the general kind of books, the life of each and every member is described, the happenings in their life and how they are interconnected, is carefully and clearly plotted, so as not to confuse the readers with the characters.

The man, Jeffrey Archer, sure knows the way to retain the readers’ interest till the end, and as usual captivates the readers with his writing. As a person who read it as a standalone book, I would like to say that, don’t just stop yourselves that you hadn’t read the previous ones, because this is, again, one of the best writing from the best-selling author. 🙂

Be tuned for the upcoming posts to read more about the recent books I’m burying my face into! 😀

Once a F.R.I.E.N.D.S addict, always a F.R.I.E.N.D.S addict!

Once, during my college days, I was fed up of watching a lot of movies that I decided to watch an English Series for a change. And that was when I decided to see what all these hype was about F.R.I.E.N.D.S. And that is when my addiction towards it started.

Once I started watching it, there was no stopping. I was just burning through all the episodes in such a speed that my parents got worried about me because I use to laugh so loud in middle of the night that they would wake up! 😀 I was able to complete it within a month, watching it night and day during any possible free time I get.

That was when I realised that I found the perfect cure to all the problems. I don’t mean that the incidents from the episodes helped me directly, but watching F.R.I.E.N.D.S. would distract me from my problems, cheer me up when I feel like I can’t get up and put a smile on my face when I’m all teary eyes. It would give me some amount of distraction from the problem by cranking me up so hard and get me in a lighter note so that, after sometime if I look at or approach the situation, I am able to percieve it from a newer angle, thus giving me the confidence that I never had before.

zlevjhn

From that time on till now, not a week has passed since i haven’t seen F.R.I.E.N.D.S. I would just close my eyes and keep on clicking in the F.R.I.E.N.D.S. folder since any random episode shoots up ( :P) and I feel free from my worries for that 20 minutes.

Doesn’t feel like doing anything? Watch F.R.I.E.N.D.S.

Feels like you have no one? Watch F.R.I.E.N.D.S.

A really bad day at college? Watch F.R.I.E.N.D.S.

Wanna get away from all the chaos outside? Watch F.R.I.E.N.D.S.

Got hurt by someone close? Watch F.R.I.E.N.D.S.

Saturda night and no plans? Watch F.R.I.E.N.D.S.

Feels like a loser? Watch F.R.I.E.N.D.S.

F.R.I.E.N.D.S. has helped me cope up with many major problems in my life than any other real , living person. I may seem delirious to some who haven’t watched it, but those who have will be able to get me 🙂

It has a made a total addict from which I never want to come out of.

I’m really thankful for F.R.I.E.N.D.S. for being an ‘Anchor’ in my life when no one was!
